KOPIN Advances Sustainable Porcelain Production with New Water Recycling System

PT Kedaung Oriental Porcelain Industry (KOPIN), the porcelain tableware manufacturing subsidiary of Kedaung Group, has strengthened its commitment to responsible manufacturing through the introduction of a new water recycling system at its production facility in Tangerang, Indonesia.

Developed in partnership with NIRA, an Indonesian provider of sustainable water solutions for the commercial and industrial sectors, the system recovers and treats water generated during manufacturing so that it can be reused within the facility. The project reached commercial operation following an implementation period of approximately four months.

Strengthening Water Security for Production

Water plays an important role throughout porcelain manufacturing, making a stable and dependable supply essential to the continuity of production. KOPIN previously met much of its operational demand through external water suppliers and smaller wells. During the dry season, however, reduced availability could place additional pressure on the facility’s water supply and potentially affect production stability.

To address this challenge, KOPIN worked with NIRA to develop a more resilient internal water-management system. Water from the production process can now be treated and returned to a standard suitable for reuse, reducing the volume that would otherwise be discharged while supporting a more circular approach to resource management.

By recovering water for continued use within the facility, the system also reduces KOPIN’s dependence on external supplies, particularly during periods of lower water availability.

Recycling Up to 130 Cubic Metres of Water Per Day

The new system has a treatment capacity of approximately 130 cubic meters of water per day. This is equivalent to more than 6,800 standard 19-litre refillable water containers every day.

The recovered water is held in a dedicated storage tank, providing the facility with a consistent reserve for its daily operational requirements. Designed for continuous operation, the system can process water around the clock to support KOPIN’s manufacturing activities 24 hours a day.

The installation incorporates two principal treatment technologies:

Multimedia filtration passes water through several layers of filtering media, including materials such as sand and gravel. This initial stage removes larger contaminants and suspended solids from the water.

Ultrafiltration then uses fine membrane technology to remove much smaller particles and microorganisms, further improving the quality of the recovered water before it is stored for reuse.

Together, these processes enable KOPIN to recycle water efficiently while maintaining the quality and reliability required for industrial use.

Supporting Operational and Environmental Resilience

The project delivers both operational and environmental benefits. A more stable internal supply of treated water helps protect production from seasonal shortages, while reduced dependence on water purchased from third parties can contribute to greater operational efficiency.

The system also supports KOPIN’s efforts to reduce pressure on natural water resources and strengthen its alignment with environmental standards governing industrial water and waste management.

According to KOPIN Plant Manager Yualfin Renaldi, the installation forms part of the company’s long-term commitment to operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. By improving the reliability of its water supply, KOPIN can support the continuity of production while managing an important natural resource more responsibly.

A Practical Approach to Sustainable Manufacturing

The collaboration reflects KOPIN’s broader approach to sustainability: introducing practical improvements that generate measurable environmental benefits while strengthening the resilience of its manufacturing operations.

Through the implementation of its water recycling system, KOPIN is taking a further step towards more resource-efficient porcelain production. The initiative demonstrates how investment in responsible water management can simultaneously improve environmental performance, strengthen operational reliability, and support more sustainable manufacturing practices over the long term.
